Oratory Contest
We had a very good Oratory Contest this year with 6 excellent speeches
from our young men and women. Each of them presented their views very well
and much was learned by their efforts. We had a good number in attendance
though I did not get a count of how many were there. The room was a good
choice with plenty of space and comfort. Our 6 participants this year in the
order in which they spoke were; Shauntel Thomas who placed 3rd., Robin
Johnson, Faith Borck who placed 1st., Josh Williams, Amber
Akin and Taylor Borck who placed 2nd. Each of these are to be
congratulated for a job well done. Hopefully we will hear again from these
and more next year. The judges this year were Mayor Michael Nesbitt, Teacher
Marie Wiser and Pastor Alvin Hitchcock. Thanks to all who helped make this
another successful event for our chapter. Our winner now will go to
Nashville to compete with the other winners from across the state. The
statewide contest will be on June 14th. 1:00 pm at Aquinas College in
Nashville.
SJR-127
Last week there were 2 attempts by Pro-Life Representatives to move
this bill to the House floor for a vote. One attempt was in the health
subcommittee and another was to suspend the rules to pull the bill out of
the committee. Sadly both attempts failed. A small minority of
pro-abortion representatives continue to speak for the entire state.
Pro-life forces fell a few votes short of the number needed to even get
this bill to a vote. I made several attempts to call our Representative
Frank Buck, but I was told he was not available and he did not return any
of my phone calls. Please call him and express your feelings to him not
supporting this bill. SJR 127 has been passed in the Senate, but not in
the House. I do not know if there will be any other attempts this session
or not. But as long as the House is in session, there is hope of passage.
Our message continues to be 'Let
the People Vote', we all had the opportunity a few years ago to vote
on the state lottery, why should we not have the same opportunity to vote
on SJR 127 which would bring back several common sense laws to protect
mothers and babies against abortion? You can call Rep. Buck at
800-449-8366, ext 13817 or by emailing rep.frank.buck@legislature.state.tn.us
Defunding Planned Parenthood
Mid April the Senate Health and Welfare Committee passed a bill, SB3049, that
would allow for family planning funds to be diverted away from Planned
Parenthood in Tennessee, the state's leading promoter and provider of
abortions. The bill now moves to the full Senate where intense debate
and opposition from pro-abortion supporters is expected. Senate
Bill 3049, sponsored by Raymond
Finney (R-Maryville), would change priority for tax funding
to be given first to local health departments, teaching hospitals and/or
other non-profit organizations. In the 2007-08 state budget Tennessee
affiliates of Planned Parenthood received at least $1.1 million tax dollars.
This legislation will allow diversion of those funds.
Mother's Day Ad
The Mother's Day Ad has been sent to the paper and you can look
for it in the edition that comes out on May 8th. This year we had 20
people to submit 23 names of mothers to be placed in the Ad. This is much
more than last year. Though it not as big as we had hoped for, it will be
something that should be noticed by many readers of the Carthage Courier.
I appreciate each of you who gathered names for the Ad. and to John Rich
who helped on this project.
Next Meeting
The next chapter meeting will be May 13th. at Christ Church Fellowship
on Water Street. The time for our meetings is 6:30 p.m. Try to attend our
meetings and help us plan our projects.
