SMITH COUNTY CHAPTER

TENNESSEE RIGHT TO LIFE

     Chapter Newsletter

March 2008

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.               Psalms 139:13-16

Notes From Pastor's Dinner
The pastor's dinner that we have been working on was held this past month. As best as I could tell, we had maybe 10 churches represented with pastors and/or youth workers and wives. The attendance was 32 which included some of us chapter members. I had hoped for a greater turnout, some were not able to make it because of sickness and other responsibilities. The weather might have been a factor for some. Those who were there heard a very moving speaker, Myra Simons. She told of the battles in her own life and how she became a spokesperson for the unborn.
Thanks to all who helped make this event a successful one.

SJR-127
On Tuesday February 26th. the Tennessee House of Representatives had a subcommittee meeting on the bill SJR-127. I emailed most of you about this and urged you to contact Representative Frank Buck and urge his influence on this committee. Rep. Buck is not on this committee but he could have helped influence those who are. But the bill was killed in that committee as it has been done in the past. There is enough support for the bill that it would pass if moved to the House floor. Our state right to life office is working on other ways to get this bill to the House floor. Let's keep praying and working to get this passed in both chambers.

Projects
We are underway with planning the Oratory Contest this year. I have sent out materials to churches and schools and to the newspaper. Those in home school have also been sent information. If you know of high school students in grades 9-12, tell them about our contest and encourage them to enter. The top 3 winners will receive $100, $75 and $50 respectively. We have some helps and tips they can use to prepare. Students must submit a application form no later than March 31st. The contest will be held on April 8th. at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce Community Room.

Women's Day On the Hill
The time has come to take part in this annual event. This year it will be on March 25th. at the Sheraton Downtown Hotel in Nashville. It is especially for women, but us guys can go to. The day will begin with a legislative update, then we will go to the state capitol offices and meet our Senator and Representative, come back to the hotel for lunch, then the speaker will be Jill Stanek. The day will end with an silent auction. Day care is available for those who need it. To find out more, click on this link WomensDayOnTheHill. I would encourage as many as can to attend this. They ask that we sign up by March 17th. in order to get our legislative packet. Call 615-298-5433 or email mtassart@tnrtl.org to register.

Next Meeting
The next regular meeting will be on March 10th. We meet at the Christ Church Fellowship,  209 3rd. Ave. West in Carthage. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm. Please make plans to come and help our chapter be a Pro-Life voice in Smith County.
